Jim Engel is a self-taught abstract artist born in Iowa City, Iowa, and based in Quebec since 1993. With a professional degree in Landscape Architecture from the University of Georgia, where he graduated with honours, Engel developed a strong foundation in design, colour composition, and form through both academic study and extensive visits to botanical gardens across the United States and Canada. His background in landscape design continued through fifteen years running a gardening business, where he worked closely with spatial organization and colour relationships. Now retired, he dedicates his daily practice to abstraction in acrylic painting and mixed media, often incorporating recycled materials and found objects in both two and three-dimensional works. Engel’s practice reflects a sustained interest in construction, experimentation, and visual play, creating works that range from direct and whimsical to enigmatic, inviting viewers to encounter them as distinct and self-contained realities shaped by material exploration and surprise.

Jim Engel est un artiste abstrait autodidacte né à Iowa City, dans l'Iowa, et installé au Québec depuis 1993. Titulaire d’un diplôme professionnel en architecture paysagère de l’Université de Géorgie, où il a obtenu son diplôme avec mention, Engel a acquis de solides bases en matière de conception, de composition chromatique et de forme grâce à ses études universitaires et à de nombreuses visites dans des jardins botaniques aux États-Unis et au Canada. Il a mis à profit son expérience en aménagement paysager en dirigeant pendant quinze ans une entreprise de jardinage, où il a travaillé de près sur l’organisation spatiale et les relations entre les couleurs. Aujourd’hui à la retraite, il consacre sa pratique quotidienne à l’abstraction dans la peinture acrylique et les techniques mixtes, incorporant souvent des matériaux recyclés et des objets trouvés dans des œuvres tant bidimensionnelles que tridimensionnelles. La pratique d’Engel reflète un intérêt constant pour la construction, l’expérimentation et le jeu visuel, créant des œuvres qui vont du direct et fantaisiste à l’énigmatique, invitant les spectateurs à les découvrir comme des réalités distinctes et autonomes façonnées par l’exploration des matériaux et la surprise.
